BARNSTABLE – Today marks the end of Bay State Bike Week, the statewide effort to encourage bicycling as an alternative means of transportation.

As part of the past week’s festivities, local bicyclists were treated to promotional events and giveaways at the Cape Cod Rail Trail and Cape Cod Canal Bike Path.

The final official event on Friday allowed bikers to meet up for a breakfast and information session with other public transportation officials, including director of the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Tom Cahir.

“On the CapeFLYER train from Boston to Buzzards Bay in the summer we have a specific car called the bike car with 50 or 60 stands with tools for them to work on their bike on the ride down, get off on Cape Cod and get to the bike path,” Cahir said.

Attendees at the breakfast also received extensive bike trail maps and safety equipment.

Free minor bike adjustments were provided by Sea Sports Cyclery and Outdoors.
