Former Student Found Dead at Hyannis School

police carHYANNIS – The identity of the person found dead this morning outside the back door of Hyannis West Elementary School is still not being released by police.

But Barnstable Schools Superintendent Mary Czajkowski released a statement that the person was a 2011 graduate of Barnstable High School who died from a self-inflicted gun wound.

This morning at 5:50 a.m. Hyannis West Elementary School Principal Kathi Amato was contacted by Barnstable Police that the body was found by a person walking their dog early this morning.

Local and state police were called to the scene to investigate the incident and the school was closed to allow time for the investigation.

Parents were notified via the school’s Alert Now system that the school was closed for the day.

Pricipal Amato, school counselors and staff will be meeting tomorrow morning prior to the opening of school and a letter will be sent home with students tomorrow, according to Dr. Czajkowski.

Dr. Czajkowski was in communication with Barnstable Schools Director of Student Serivces Gina Hurley and Barnstable High School Principal Patrick Clark who will convene the school crisis team to meet with any students needing counseling.
