Former Boston Mayor Tom Menino is being remembered today after he died this morning of cancer.

Menino, 71, was the longest serving mayor in Boston’s history. He was elected and unprecedented five times.

In a statement, President Obama called Menino “the embodiment of the city he loved and led for two decades.”

US Congressman Bill Keating (D-Bourne) said, ““In the four decades that I have known Tommy Menino as a friend and colleague, I have never seen another person in public life that had his ability to relate person-to-person with anyone and everyone he met.  My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Angela, his family, and the entire City of Boston.  We lost a true champion for the Commonwealth.”

Menino left office earlier this year after serving two decades as Boston’s mayor.

He became Boston’s first Italian-American mayor when he took over as acting mayor in 1993, after Ray Flynn was appointed ambassador to the Vatican.

Menino was a lifelong resident of Hyde Park.
