PROVINCETOWN – Cape Cod and the Islands and the Azores have a shared history and culture when it

comes to whales over the last three centuries.

Both places have gone from hunting the marine mammals to watching them.

The Center for Coastal Studies will bring British author Philip Hoare to Provincetown next week for an illustrated lecture.

“The Azores: Stories of Islands and Whales” examines the human and natural history of the Azores and draws on a series of filming and research expeditions Hoare has made to the region.

Hoare, who authored the book “The Whale and The Sea Inside” and regularly visits Provincetown, will discuss the legends, literature and culture of the Azores from Columbus and Darwin and Moby-Dick to the Mary Celeste.

The lecture will also focus on the ocean’s mammals, including common dolphins, rare beaked whales and sperm whales.

The event will be held at Napi’s Restaurant on Wednesday at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
