C-LAB to Reduce Staff

ER medical symbolHYANNIS – Cape Cod Healthcare is planning layoffs of eight positions at its C-Lab facilities and the union representing those workers has gotten involved.

Jerry Fishbein, vice president of 1199 SEIU, which represents the employees, said the process can take some time as particulars are worked out.

Fishbein said, there is an extensive labor management process that the union manages. With regard to the recent layoffs, union officials are negotiating over the impact of changes in hours and reorganization of the different C-Lab sites.

Fishbein said Cape Cod Healthcare officials have said they feel strongly that they need to reorganize the sites to better manage patient volumes.

In addition to layoffs, Fishbein said, there are workers hours changing and workers being relocated to other labs in the C-Lab system.

“We are going to see the loss of some medical secretary jobs,” Fishbein said, but the union is working through that through the contract and the labor management process.

There are training opportunities for those workers and Cape Cod Healthcare has agreed to leave those positions in place until the training has completed, he said.

Fishbein says the workers in this case have employment rights that are a model in the industry.

C-Lab has 13 sites on the Cape and a little more than 120 employees, Fishbein said. There are also about 60 patient service techs, who are the ones having most of their hours changed, he said.

There are eight medical secretaries, three of which do not qualify for new positions but could if they chose to, Fishbein said.
