Cabbie Stabbed in Hyannis

police02HYANNIS – A taxi cab driver was stabbed in Hyannis this morning by a man with a screwdriver-type weapon.

Barnstable Police Sergeant Sean Sweeney said the cab driver picked up his fare at the Cape Mart near the Hyannis Transportation Center at about 10:30 a.m. and dropped him not far away on Barnstable Road near the Cromwell Court development.

The cab driver described the man as in his 20s, about 5’7″ and wearing a grey sweatshirt.

When they reached the destination, Sweeney said the man stabbed the cab driver, grabbed the driver’s backpack and ran away.

The driver had three rips in his jacket allegedly caused by the weapon. He did not need medical attention, Sweeney said.

The man ran in the direction of Spring Street.

Barnstable and Yarmouth k-9 officers searched for the man but were unable to locate him.

The backpack contained the cabbie’s wallet and about $60. Sweeney said armed robbery is a felony that could land the suspect in prison for 15 years.
