SOUTH YARMOUTH – A new series of forums will seek to address the drug crisis and prevent local students from getting caught up in addition.

Calmer Choice, a mindfulness program used in multiple Cape Cod school districts, plans to bring together community leaders to discuss how to best equip students to prevent poor choices.

“Students nowadays are often anxiety-ridden, stressed-out and distracted. Some end up experimenting with illicit drugs as a form of escape or self-medication. What we offer are tools students can use to enhance their social and emotional intelligence – whether it’s confronting illicit drugs, the distractions of technology, the destructiveness of bullying, or the demands of test-taking,” said Calmer Choice founder and executive director Fiona Jensen. “There are no magic solutions or silver bullets that will completely eradicate addiction or the pitfalls of poor choices,” Jensen said. “But, there are methods and practices that can make students more resilient in the face of difficulties.”

The first event, titled “The Calm Before The Storm,” is planned for Tuesday night at 6 at the Mattacheese Middle School in West Yarmouth. State Representative Randy Hunt (R-Sandwich), Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe, parent advocate Trudy Avery, Falmouth school counselor Joann Sykes, and Calmer Choice program director Adria Kennedy will participate in the forum.

The event is free and pre-registration at Calmer Choice’s website is recommended. Space is limited.

One member of the Dennis-Yarmouth school committee is trying to get Calmer Choice removed from the district, saying she believes it’s potentially unsafe for children. The school committee will address the matter at their meeting Wednesday night.
