BUZZARDS BAY – Thousands of people gathered in Buzzards Bay beside the Cape Cod Canal to celebrate the waterway’s 100th birthday.

The Centennial Ceremony left at least one spectator overwhelmed.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s President Rear Admiral Richard Gurnon, who served as co-chairman of the centennial committee said the event was very emotional for him.

“When the Bourne Alumnae Chorus sang the National Anthem, I don’t think I’ve stood so tall in my life. When the chorus played “Victory at Sea,” I had goosebumps. When we heard that original composition of the Cape Cod Canal, I was truly stunned at how great it was and I cried during “Danny Boy.” This is a spectacular celebration of what is in our backyard,” he said.

The evening ended with a $75,000 fireworks display set off from the railroad bridge and two barges in the canal.
