PROVINCETOWN – It was a sweet day for a parade in Provincetown Thursday as the annual Carnival attracted around 90,000 party-goers to the Outer Cape.
This year’s theme was Candyland, which resulted in eclectic and sometimes provocative outfits and parade floats.
Costumes ranged from lollipops to cotton candy, and other candy-related themes.
The annual event, sponsored by the Provincetown Business Guild, is considered one of the largest outdoor celebrations in New England.
One of the parade’s founders, Herbie Hintzer, told the Guild that the parade has come a long way in 35 years.
“No floats. No banners. We did not even have costumes. I wore a Ranch t-shirt, the inn where I was working at the time. With about five other inn owners we decided to do something to spark life into the slowest week of the summer,” he said.
Contained in the outlandish and over-the-top history of the parade was the year Mews restaurant owner Rob Robin actually rented a live elephant that walked the parade route.
Parade organizers announced their 2016 theme: “Back to the 80’s,” at the end of Thursday’s celebration.
