Cape Builders Seeing Uptick in Business

homebuildingBARNSTABLE – After years of struggle, Cape Cod builders are seeing an uptick in business, especially in the remodeling sector of the industry.

This past year was a good one for the industry, according to industry leaders.

“We see more and more people who are feeling better about the economy and are more willing to loosen their purse strings and do work on their homes that they haven’t been able to do for awhile,” said Christine Duren, executive director of the Homebuilders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod.

She said the organization is looking to work with towns in order to improve the affordable housing outlook.

We’re hoping that 2015 is just as busy for our folks but also that we can have some influence to change some zoning decisions so we can have some higher density which will then make individual units less expensive,” she said.

She said the vast majority of building permits on Cape are for remodeling jobs or additions to existing homes with only about 10 percent of permits issued for new homes.

She said a number of custom home builders switched their focus to remodeling in recent years to take advantage of the upswing in remodeling activity.
