Cape Cod Commission Proposing Big Changes for Route 28 Corridor in Cotuit

COTUIT – A stretch of Route 28 in Cotuit notorious for traffic snarls is being primed for a major reconfiguration.

The Cape Cod Commission recently finalized a report that recommends drastic changes to the corridor, including re-configuring the Route 130 intersection, and placing a roundabout at the Santuit-Newtown Road intersection.

The Route 28 and Route 130 intersection would actually be moved westward towards Mashpee, which will hopefully alleviate the continuous tie-ups, and increase safety.

“Even during the dead of winter, you can see backups there, and again during the peak season they do extend for miles,” said Glen Cannon, Technical Services Director for the Cape Cod Commission.

“It definitely needs to be upgraded, again there is such limitations at the existing location, we want to move it further west towards Mashpee, so we can eliminate those backups.”

The corridor study revealed that in the past three years there have been 66 accidents, resulting in 13 injuries, and one fatality, which occurred at the Santuit-Newtown Road intersection.

The idea of the roundabouts on Cape Cod are gaining more traction and are being used more frequently, due to an increased measure of safety, and also a decrease in overall maintenance costs.

“Once they’re in place they don’t need to be upgraded every year so the maintenance costs is less over the years and we’ve been having great success with them across Cape Cod,” Cannon said.

There is no time-frame for the project to be completed, and because Route 28 is a state road, the next step for the Cape Cod Commission is to reach out to MassDOT, and to secure funding.
