Cape Cod Community College Hosts Display from The Clothesline Project

BARNSTABLE – In recognition of April being “Sexual Assault Awareness Month”, Independence House and The Clothesline Project conducted a visual display of t-shirts at Cape Cod Community College.

The exhibit, which continues through Wednesday, features a number of shirts that was created and designed to represent a particular person’s experience, by the survivor or by someone who cares about the survivor.

“It was actually originated by a group of activists who wanted to create a visual and they use the clothesline because it used to be a way where women talked to each other when they had small neighborhoods, but also it was a way to hang dirty laundry,” said Chris Morin from Independence House.

In collaboration with the display, the movie “Spotlight” was played at the Tilden Arts Theater, followed by a discussion on the film.

“We’re trying to raise awareness of the problem of sexual assault, not only among college students which is a grave problem, but also throughout the population,” said College Dean Jeanmarie Fraser.

On Wednesday, the Cape Cod and Islands Enough Abuse Campaign will be showing the movie “It’s Not Just Jenna” in Lecture Hall A.

The college has hosted the t-shirt display every April, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, since 1990.
