HYANNIS – A longtime county extension director is retiring.
Bill Clark, who is the county’s longest serving employee at 38 years, is retiring from his position as director of the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension.
Clark said that now is the perfect time to leave.
“I’m at that age, I’ll be 66 this spring and it’s time,” said Clark. “I’ve been here 38 years, I’ve really enjoyed it and I looked forward to going to work every day. I work with a great group of employees here.”
Although he is retiring from his position with the county, Clark will continue to teach at Cape Cod Community College and run the college’s horticultural program.
Looking back, Clark said he is proud of the accomplishments of the extension, including the addition of a resource specialist to help Cape towns create flood plain maps for the federal community rating system.
When Clark started with the extension, the organization provided help to farmers, landscapers and gardeners and ran programs for youth and homemakers.
Since then, the extension’s service has grown to include landscapers and ground maintenance at golf courses and public facilities.
“What’s great about this job is that I work with all 15 towns on the Cape,” said Clark. “Public officials from Provincetown down to Bourne and Falmouth, as well as industry. All the green industries, landscapers, garden centers, golf course folks.”
Clark’s deputy, Mike Maguire, who runs the hazardous waste program for the extension, has been tapped as the new director.
