YARMOUTH – A Cape Cod non-profit, dedicated to building a centrally-located commercial kitchen where local food makers can test ideas and network, held their annual meeting last night at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.

Cape Cod Culinary Incubator has welcomed over a dozen new members and many more since the idea came to Lee Hill about two years ago.

The Cummaquid resident with a background in finance, business and law said he wants to get younger people started in food-based businesses.

“Rather than feeding people, we want to teach them how to fish,” said Hill. “What the incubator does is, we educate, we mentor and we motivate would-be entrepreneurs.”

Members of the organization gathered last night to hear plans of launching a fundraising drive for a new facility and a chance to taste locally made food products.

The idea of a commercial kitchen used by local food makers isn’t a new idea, according to Hill.

“There are 139 culinary incubators throughout the country,” said Hill.

Hill said the organization’s goal this is year is to form a location committee that will identify a spot and design the facility.

Most of the funds for the facility will come from local, state and federal grants and from private donors.

The commercial kitchen would then be used to support new food business opportunities, which Hill said, could include the nurturing of five to 10 start-up companies at any time, and producing two to three businesses a year.

“We have the energy and the wherewithal to be very active in the food industry,” said Hill. “My goal is to have the food industry get up there and compete with hospitality and health care as a primary industry.”
