Cape Downwinders To Ask Baker To Request Pilgrim Shutdown

massachusetts-state-house-300x198BOSTON – Local anti-nuclear activist group Cape Downwinders are in Boston today calling on Governor Charlie Baker to request the federal government shutdown the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.

The move comes a day after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission placed Pilgrim under additional oversight for continued issues with the plant’s safety valves. The NRC says Pilgrim could be faced with a shutdown if problems continue.

“The increased nuclear regulatory oversight has not made any significant difference. It continues to fail and fail,” said Diane Turco of the Cape Downwinders. “What we’re seeing is a seriously dangerous downward trend.”

Pilgrim has been placed under additional oversight multiple times since 2013.
