Cape League Recap: Orleans Extends Winning Streak

HYANNIS – There were a full slate of games Tuesday evening on Cape Cod.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 3

Orleans Firebirds 4

W: JT Hintzen (1-0) L: Tanner Graham (0-1) S: Josh Hiatt (4)

Orleans continues their current tear across the Cape League with a season high 4 game win streak and winners of 8 out of their last 10. To put the cherry on top of the sundae, the Firebirds were able to execute a comeback victory against divisional rival Yarmouth-Dennis. The Red Sox received a stellar effort out of their starting pitcher, Hogan Harris (Louisiana Lafayette), who threw 5 innings of one run ball while striking out 9. Harris left the game in line for the victory if the Red Sox could hold on to their 3-1 advantage. 3 hits, including a RBI double from Brandon Riley (UNC), an error and a wild pitch lead to a 3 run bottom of the 6th for Orleans. With 3 innings left to play, JT Hintzen (Florida Southern) and Josh Hiatt (UNC) would stifle the Red Sox, not allowing a single baserunner to close out the game. Hintzen and Hiatt are developing into a formidable one-two punch out of the bullpen. Hiatt has 4 saves on the year while maintaining a 0.00 ERA and Hintzen boasts a 10:1 strikeout to walk ratio as well as holding opposing hitters to a .077 batting average. The loss is Y-D’s second in a row, but the glass is half full for the Red Sox as they keep their #1 standing in the East.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 1

Wareham Gatemen 5

W: Justin Glover (2-0) L: Kevin Coulter (0-3)

The Harbor Hawks went into their off day after having two explosive games at the plate in their doubleheader against Chatham, but tonight they left their bats at home and the Gatemen took advantage. Starter Justin Glover (Georgia) scattered 5 hits and 1 earned run over 5 innings on the mound improving his record to 2-0 on the season. Acton, Massachusetts native and Harvard Senior, Noah Zavolas pitched three scoreless in relief and Franklin German (North Florida) cleaned up the Harbor Hawks in the 9th. At the plate, John Toppa (UCONN) went 2 for 3 on the evening including a clutch 2 RBI single in the bottom of the 4th to break open the game for the Gatemen. The seesaw season continues for Wareham who find themselves out of the basement and into 4th place with the win.

Brewster Whitecaps 1

Falmouth Commodores 7

W: Scott Politz (2-1) L: J.R. McDermott (1-1)

The Commodores brought the boom sticks to Guv Fuller Field tonight mashing 4 HRs off Whitecap pitching. Marty Bechina (Michigan State) continued to be red hot hitting his fifth and sixth home runs of the season and increasing his RBI total to 18, both of which are good for tops in the league. Commodore 2nd baseman, Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville State) had 3 hits out of the leadoff spot raising his batting average to .415 on the season (2nd in the league). On the mound, Falmouth starter, Scott Politz (Yale) won his 2nd start in a row improving to 2-1. Politz pitched 6 innings, only allowing 1 run, 4 hits, and striking out a pair. The Commodores enter tonight with a two game win streak and only a game out of first in the West. For Brewster, back to back losses to start the week drop them to 3rd in the East.

Cotuit Kettleers 3

Harwich Mariners 0

W: David Inman (1-0) L: Jacob Billingsley (0-1) S: Clark Cota (2)

The Kettleers needed the off day after being swept in their Sunday doubleheader and they rebounded with a shutout victory over the Harwich Mariners. Wright State’s Zane Collins started off the game with 4.1 strong innings of work, allowing 5 hits and striking out 4. Collins is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA in 4 appearances for the Kettleers in 2017. Out of the bullpen, David Inman (Coastal Carolina) breezed through 1 inning and then Clark Cota (UNC-Wilmington) fired 3.2 near perfect innings only surrendered 1 hit and dispatching 6 Mariners. On offense, Greyson Jenista (Wichita State) went a perfect 3 for 3 on the evening and added a pair of stolen bases. For Harwich, their hitting struggles continue. Tuesday marked the 3rd time they have been shutout so far this season and they are tied for the lowest amount of runs scored in the league.

Bourne Braves 2

Chatham Anglers 8

W: Dan Hammer (1-0) L: Christopher Holba (0-2)

Whatever the Anglers did on their day off paid dividends for their hitting as they were able to shake off their Sunday losses to pound the Bourne Braves 8-2. The mighty batting trio for the Anglers, Jacob Olson (South Carolina), Nick Patten (Delaware), and Shea Langeliers (Baylor) combined for 5 RBIs. Olson had 3 all by himself on the night including a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the 3rd. Chatham starter, Dan Hammer (Pitt) chucked 6 innings of shutout ball to earn his first win on the season and drop his ERA to a very respectable 1.69. The Braves, despite the loss, did have two solo shots from catcher Zac Susi (UCONN) and shortstop Andrew Fregia (Sam Houston State).
