Cape League Recap: Y-D Continues to Roll

Harwich Mariners 2

Bourne Braves 3

W: Nick Johnson L: Theodore Rodliff

For a while during this game, one would think there was a force field blocking both teams from home plate. Runners were being stranded left and right. Bourne left 2 or more runners on base in 5 innings. However, Bourne pitching cruised through most of the game with the exception of the 4th and 5th inning where Harwich did their damage on an error and solo blast by the 9 batter, Kyler Murray (Oklahoma). Bourne’s relievers, Chad Luensmann (Nebraska) and Worcester native, Nick Johnson (Rhode Island) pitched 4 scoreless out of the pen to keep the Braves in the game. When you knock on the door long enough, someone is going to answer, and that is exactly what Bourne was counting on. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, Grant Witherspoon (Tulane) lined a single to right field and then Lyle Lin (USC) scorched a double down the 1st baseline to put two runners in scoring position. In the next at-bat, Logan McRae (Charleston), hit a seeing-eye single to shallow right after a 9 pitch marathon scoring Witherspoon and advancing pitch-runner Turner Brown (ECU) to 3rd. Scott Schreiber fell to a 1-2 count quickly, but sent a scorching ground ball between 1st and 2nd to walk it off for the Braves. Bourne improves to 4-2 on the season, while Harwich falls to 3-5-1.

Cotuit Kettleers 3

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 5

W: Josh McMinn L: Zane Collins S: Riley McCauley

Yarmouth-Dennis is picking up right where they left last year…and the year before that…and the year before that…residing at the top of the league. Cotuit got off to a hot start scoring 2 in the top of the 1st. Y-D would score a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, but would take the lead in the top of the 4th after a Luke Miller (Indiana) two-run homer. The Red Sox would add two more in the 5th and with lights out relief pitching from Brendan Nail (Western Carolina) and Riley McCauley (Michigan State), they were able to stave off any Kettleer comeback to win their 5th game of the season. For McCauley, he logged his league leading 4th save and is 100% in save opportunities so far this season. Cotuit could use some soul searching tonight as their 4 game win streak to start the season has been matched by a 4 game losing streak.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 5

Falmouth Commodores 10

W: Thomas Ponticelli L: Nick Sandlin

Michigan State Spartan Marty Bechina has been a menace to opposing pitchers so far this season. He hit his league leading 4th home run and added 3 RBIs to increase his league leading total to 13. The next closest batter has 8. Hyannis and Falmouth pitching both started out strong, only surrendering two runs each through 6 innings. Falmouth starter, Tyler Blohm (Maryland) struck out 7 Harbor Hawks in 5 innings of work. The game looked to be going down to the wire, but then Hyannis allowed 5 free passes to start the bottom of the 8th inning. Back to back to back RBI hits by Bechina, Alec Bohm (Wichita State), and Clayton Daniel (Jacksonville State), resulted in a 7 run flood by the Commodores. Hyannis started a comeback in the top of the 9th, but were stopped short, and Falmouth took home their 4th win of the year.

Chatham Anglers 3

Orleans Firebirds 4

W: Jake Wong L: Nick Silva S: Josh Hiatt

Orleans’ shutout streak came to an end on Thursday night at a total of 20 innings when a wild pitch scored an Angler, followed by a RBI single from Nick Patten (Delaware). The Firebirds found themselves down by 3 runs and with the run production exhibited so far this season, the lead looked almost insurmountable. That was until the 6th when Brandon Riley (UNC) stroked an RBI single and catcher, Cesar Salazar (Arizona) blasted a two-run home run to put Orleans on top 4-3. The Firebird bullpen was flawless on the evening with Jake Wong (Grand Canyon) picking up the win after 2 and two-thirds innings pitched and Josh Hiatt (UNC) notched his 2nd save of the season after a hitless 9th. On Monday, Chatham saw themselves atop the West Division, now after losing three in a row they are looking up at Y-D and Brewster from third place. Orleans, much like the phoenix on their logo, have risen from the ashes of the West basement to a tie with Chatham in 3rd.

Wareham Gatemen 2

Brewster Whitecaps 9

W: Andrew Pagnozzi L: Peyton Culbertson

While the focus has been on the Cotuit start and slide and Y-D’s continued success, Brewster has been in the shadows blowing teams out. Early in the season they posses a league high +18 run differential. They continued their onslaught tonight posting 9 runs on 16 hits against the Gatemen. Chandler Taylor (Bama) continued to roll, hitting another home run and knocking in two runs. Taylor finds himself 2nd in the league in home runs, tied for 3rd in the league in RBIs (7) and almost all of that production has come in the past two days. Cesar Trejo (UNC Greensboro) would launch a home run of his own and Michael Curry would send 3 runs across home plate in the game. Wareham found themselves in the game, 2-2, but a 4 run 6th and a 3 run 7th from Brewster would seal their fate. Andrew Pagnozzi (Ole Miss), William Tribucher (Michigan), and Robert Broom (Mercer), combined to pitch 4 and two-thirds of shutout baseball to keep the Gatemen off the scoreboard and propel Brewster to 4-2-1.
