Cape Police Officers to Help Kids Get Ready for School

Cop ShopYARMOUTH – For the fourth straight year police officers from around the Cape will be joining children to purchase clothes and school supplies on Tuesday.

The Back-to-School Shop with a Cop event hosted by the Yarmouth Police Department helps families in need prepare their kids for the upcoming school year.

Each child will receive a back pack filled with supplies and will shop for clothing at Old Navy in Hyannis with a uniformed officer from several Cape towns.

“There’s nothing really like the feeling and the sight of seeing young people actually shopping with clothes or supplies with police officers in uniform,” said Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos. “Especially now where there are some people who really don’t know what police do and they may have the wrong opinion of what we do.”

The event not just helps area children but also plays a role in establishing a strong relationship between police and the community.

“This is a great way to show that we are just part of the community like everyone else,” he said. “We have an important role of protecting people and doing what we do, but really it comes down to working together.”

Xiarhos said the best to get involved with the program is to make a donation.

“Everything is funded by donations,” Xiarhos said. “It’s not tax money that’s used. It’s just people donating.”

Donations can be made at Yarmouth Police Headquarters or checks made out to the Yarmouth Police Relief Association can be mailed to the department.

The event will start at the Yarmouth Police Headquarters at noon before the children and officers will head to Old Navy at 2 p.m.
