BOURNE – More than 300 people volunteered their time this weekend at the Trowbridge Tavern in Bourne to put together 1,700 Christmas care packages for troops overseas.
The effort is part of the Cape Cod Cares for the Troops campaign, which was started 11 years ago by then-12-year-old Dylan DeSilva.
“It started with just one care package,” DaSilva said.
Over the years, the organization has sent about 20,000 packages to soldiers overseas.
Now the group has grown and according to DeSilva’s mother Michelle, the demand has grown.
DeSilva said that the packages will go to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
DaSilva said they still need to raise about $9,000 to ship the packages.
