Cape League Recap: Division Gaps Begin to Close

HYANNIS – The hot starts have cooled off and the slow starts have sped up as the divisions are tightening up midway through the second week of play on the Cape.

Chatham Anglers 8

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 11

W: Hunter Parsons (1-1) L: Josiah Gray (0-1) S: Karl Kauffman (1)

Division rivals clashed in Yarmouth and put on quite the show for those in attendance. Chatham took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th on RBI singles by Cody Roberts (Maine) and Austin Edens (Samford). Yarmouth responded with back to back jacks by Nicholas Quintana (Arizona) and Kole Cottam (Tennessee) to lead off the bottom of the frame. It was the first home run of the year for both Quintana and Cottam. Not to be outdone just yet, Chatham took advantage of a couple of Red Sox miscues to score 2 and UNC’s Cody Roberts would blast a three run bomb to put up a 5 spot in the top of the 5th. After adding another in the 6th, Chatham looked to coast to victory and back into 1st in the West. In the word’s of Lee Corso, “Not so fast my friend!” In the bottom of the 8th, the Red Sox erupted for 7 hits and 9 runs to take a 3 run lead on the shellshocked Anglers. Nico Hoerner (Stanford) launched his first home run of the summer, a three run shot, and Kyle Isbel (UNLV) would cap the scoring with a solo blast of his own. Michigan’s Karl Kauffman worked a 1-2-3 9th to earn his first save of the season and keep the Red Sox atop of the West Division.

Orleans Firebirds 4

Bourne Braves 0

W: Joey Murray (1-1) L: Christopher Holba (0-1) S: JT Hintzen

For the second straight evening the Firebirds recorded a four-hit shutout, this time the victim came in the form of the Bourne Braves. The combination of Joey Murray (Kent State), Cody Deason (Arizona), and JT Hintzen (Florida Southern), would only allow one Brave to reach second base the entire contest. Deason and Hintzen pitched three 4 innings total and struck out 7 batters out of the bullpen. Bourne pitching kept the game close, only giving up one run through 8 innings. However, in the top of the 9th, Medford, Massachusetts native, Steve Passatempo (UMass Lowell) hit a 2 RBI single with the bases loaded, which was followed up by a Ethan Paul (Vanderbilt) RBI double to add a little breathing room for the Firebirds. Hintzen pitched a perfect 1-2-3 ninth to shut the door and improve the Firebirds to 3-5 on the season.

Wareham Gatemen 10

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 2

W: Frankie Bartow (1-1) L: Kevin Coulter (0-1)

After being shutout on Tuesday, the Gatemen hit the gym and blew out the Harbor Hawks on the road. Blake Sabol (USC), hitting out of the 2 spot, launched his first home run of the summer in the top of the 1st to put the Gatemen up early, 1-0. Harbor Hawk starter, Kevin Coulter, would settle in after that and both teams would remain silent until the top of the 5th. It was then that catcher, Jake Anchia (Nova Southeastern) broke the game open with a towering three run home run to right center. The Gatemen would strike big again in the top of the 6th when Luke Bonfield smashed a 3 run shot over the left field wall. Bonfield had himself a day at the plate going 4 for 5, with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Meanwhile on the mound for the Gatemen, starter Frankie Bartow (Miami) would face the minimum amount of batters in his three innings of work after inducing inning ending double plays in both the 2nd and 3rd. Justin Montgomery (Cali Baptist) would pick up where Bartow left off and pitched 4 scoreless frames. Even though Hyannis managed 10 hits on the ballgame, they couldn’t string them together and drop to 3-3-1 on the season.

Harwich Mariners 6

Cotuit Kettleers 3

W: Christopher Gau (1-0) L: Chase Cohen (1-1) S: Coke Aker (1)

Cotuit started the season red hot with a 4 game win streak, they have since dropped 3 in a row including tonight’s game at home against Harwich. The Mariners would jump out to an early 3 run advantage thanks to RBI singles courtesy of Ryne Ogren (Elon) and Jordan Verdon (San Diego State). Verdon and Ogren would account for all 6 of Harwich’s runs on the night and Verdon would notch his first home run of the year. Ogren, with his 3 for 4 performance finds himself at the top of the league in average hitting .474. Greyson Jenista (Wichita State) opened the scoring for the Kettleers in the 4th with a solo shot. Cotuit would tie the game in the 5th thanks to a wild pitch and a Griff Conine (Duke) RBI single. The score would remain tied until the top of the 7th where the Mariners would put 3 more up on the board. Cole Aker (UNC) pitched three shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn his first save of the season.

Falmouth Commodores 4

Brewster Whitecaps 7

W: Jonathan Stiever (1-0) L: Ian Koch (0-1) S: Christopher Machamer (1)

The Brewster faithful was yelling, “Roooolll Tide” all the way home after Alabama outfielder, Chandler Taylor hit a pair of home runs in a winning effort against the Commodores. The game would be tight throughout and with a tie score in the bottom of the 7th and two runners on base, Chandler smashed his second home run of the night to put the Whitecaps up for good. For Falmouth, Marty Bechina (Michigan State) would be the first batter in the Cape League to reach 10 RBIs. Bechina also leads the league in home runs and 6 out of his 9 hits on the season have been for extra bases. With the win, Brewster improves to 3-2-1, while Falmouth’s win streak hits the skids and they drop to 3-5.
