CCBL RECAP: Nail Biters Across the Cape in Tuesday Action

HYANNIS – The clouds finally broke and the sun shined down on Cape Cod for 5 games of baseball on Tuesday night.

Bourne Braves 5

Cotuit Kettleers 4

W: Daniel Bies (1-0) L: Adam Scott (0-1) S: Ryan Feltner (2)

The Bourne Braves returned to action after two days rest due to rainouts to take on the Kettleers at Lowell Park. Cotuit had the home crowd rocking early after a two run double by shortstop Zack Kone (Duke) in the bottom of the 1st. Kone ate his Wheaties this morning as he would end up a home run short of the cycle totaling 4 hits and 3 RBIs. Bourne would strike back when Tulane’s Grant Witherspoon lined a bases loaded double, scoring all three runs to cap off a 4 run inning in the top of the 3rd. The lead would be short lived as Cotuit would score 2 in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 4. Bourne would load the bases with no outs in both the 7th and 8th innings, but would manage only 1 run on a Lyle Lin (Arizona State) infield hit. What seemed to be an omen for a walk-off victory was quickly debunked by closer Ryan Feltner (Ohio State), who secured his second save of the season. The win catapulted the Braves into 1st place and Cotuit would drop their second game in as many days.

Brewster Whitecaps 7

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 7

Brewster traveled to Y-D coming off a pair of losses at the hands of the Cotuit Kettleers looking for a rebound. The night didn’t look good to start as a botched pickoff attempt and a Connor Kaiser (Vanderbilt) single put the Whitecaps down 3-0 in the bottom of the 1st. A series of errors led to three more runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Y-D took a 7-2 lead into the top of the 6th then the Whitecaps came to life. Back to back singles and walk loaded the bases with no outs. Y-D reliever, Tanner Graham (UAB) would walk in a run and allow another run to cross on a fielder’s choice. After another Graham walk with two outs and the bases loaded up again, Cesar Trejo (UNC Greensboro) cranked a double, emptying the bases and tying up the game at 7. Yarmouth-Dennis would have the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th, but Brewster’s Zach Linginfelter (Tennessee) would induce a flyout to left field and the game would end in a tie.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 5

Chatham Anglers 3

W: Ryan Weiss (1-0) L: Bo Burrup (0-1) S: Christian Tripp (3)

Chatham was riding a 3 game win streak into Tuesday night’s tilt and was looking to keep the momentum going in their direction. Ryan Weiss (Wright State) and the Harbor Hawks had other plans. Both starting pitchers brought quality grade stuff to the mound, each only giving up one run in 5 innings of work. For Hyannis, Weiss struck out 7 Anglers and holds an 8 to 1 K/BB ratio through two outings so far this season. The game broke open in the top of the 6th when Ford Proctor (Rice) connected on a Bo Burrup (BYU) offering depositing it over the right field wall for a three run home run. The blast was Proctor’s first hit on the season and it was a big one. The Anglers would mount a small comeback in the bottom of the 7th scoring two runs, but it was not enough. Hyannis closer, Christian Tripp (New Mexico), would throw a spotless 9th to secure his 3rd save of the season and lift the Harbor Hawks to 3-2-1.

Falmouth Commodores 4

Harwich Mariners 2

W: Scott Politz (1-1) L: Tim Herrin (0-1) S: Ryan Zeferjahn (1)

If you were late to this game, you missed the fireworks as 5 out of the 6 runs occurred in the 1st inning. Falmouth came knocking early as lead batter Hunter Steinmetz (Missouri State) singled and then proceeded to steal second base. Clayton Daniel (Jax St) laced a single into right field on the next pitch and the speedy Steinmetz had eyes for scoring the first run of the game. However, Nick Dalesandro (Purdue) threw a lightning bolt home to catcher Bradley Debo (NC State) to stop him in his tracks. Falmouth would not be discouraged as they would receive back to back to back RBI hits from Alec Bohm (Wichita State), Marty Bechina (Michigan State), and Willie Burger (Penn State) to go up 3-0. Harwich would answer with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but then the Commodore pitching staff put up the do not enter sign over home plate and shut out the Mariners for the remainder of the game. After a ghastly start to the season, Falmouth has won 3 out of their last 4 and improve to 3-4.

Orleans Firebirds 2

Wareham Gateman 0

W: Kevin Smith (1-1) L: Will Neely (0-1) S: Josh Hiatt (1)

The Orleans Firebirds have scored 3 or less runs in all their games so far this season except for one. Luckily for them, the trio of Kevin Smith (Georgia), Parker Kelly (Oregon), and Josh Hiatt (UNC) was throwing smoke all night last night to secure a 4-hit shutout victory. For Smith, he pitched his way to his 1st win of the 2017 season and 5th career for the Firebirds. At the plate, Orleans’ Brandon Riley (UNC) logged 3 hits in the contest including a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the 5th. For the Gatemen, catcher Willie MacIver (Washington) raised his average to a blistering .400 with 3 out of the 4 Wareham hits on the night. The result of the game finds both the Firebirds and the Gatemen at 2-5 on the season.
