Transit Authority Announces New Senior Transportation Initiatives

HYANNIS – Officials with the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) held a presentation on Tuesday to announce several new senior transportation initiatives.

They are a result of a year-long discovery tour between the CCRTA and Council on Aging (COA).

The new initiatives include increased transportation supports for seniors, improved senior travel safety and better communication and collaboration.

“There’s a lot of folks who live on the these Cape roads and it’s difficult to traverse them most of the time but our public service transportation will continue to get better and hopefully seniors will see a better situation for themselves,” said CCRTA Administrator Tom Cahir.

The CCRTA will continue their “Free Fare Wednesdays” for seniors until December 31st and will spend $40,000 in new COA funding to increase transportation for seniors.

Also further travel training will be geared towards unique senior transportation needs and there will be no cost COA driver safety and senior transportation support classes.

The CCRTA also plans to provide the COA with additional loaner vehicles for added senior needs.

State Representative Sarah Peake and Congressman Bill Keating also attended the presentation.

Peake spoke in favor of the initiatives and said that it would have a big impact on the Cape’s senior population.

“It allows for singing on the bus, going to play miniature golf, going to the theater, and yes when you need to, going to doctors’ visits and all those other things that enable people to age well and age healthfully,” said Peake.
