NEW BEDFORD – The Charles W. Morgan, America’s last remaining wooden whaling ship, will spend an extra day in New Bedford.
The ship was scheduled to depart today, but will now set sail tomorrow due to adverse sailing conditions. The ship, built in the mid-19th century, is on its 38th voyage this summer and its first voyage since 1941.
It has been painstakingly restored over the past 20 years at its homeport at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut.
The Morgan’s voyage continues with a visit to Mass Maritime Academy, followed by a trip to Provincetown.
Visitors can board the ship in New Bedford, Mass Maritime Academy and later this month in Boston. In Provincetown, the shallow harbor will prevent the ship from being able to dock at Macmillan Wharf and, therefore, there will not be an opportunity to board the historic vessel.
But during the Provincetown visit, the ship will travel out to Stellwagen Bank, a protected marine sanctuary, to help promote the sanctuary.
Adverse sailing conditions will keep the Charles W. Morgan in New Bedford for an extra day. The ship, on her 38th voyage and first since 1941, was scheduled to depart for Mass Maritime today. She will now set sail tomorrow. A visit to Provincetown is set for later this week. The Morgan is America’s last remaining wooden whaling ship.
