CHATHAM – An informal agreement between the Town of Chatham and the Chatham Bars Inn has led to a legal dispute.

The resort has filed an injunction in Barnstable Land Court to try and prevent the town from taking an easement near the fish pier through eminent domain.

Fishermen in Chatham have been able to park at the location for decades, but town officials say they need a legally binding agreement to ensure fishermen have access to the location.

“The town felt like it needed to take action to protect its historic access and access for the fishermen to get out and fish. That’s a big part of what Chatham’s all about,” said Selectman Sean Summers. “The lot precedes my memory and I’m a native Chathamite, so it’s been there ever since I was a kid. It’s always been used”

Summers says the town has attempted to negotiate with the Chatham Bars Inn on a more concrete agreement, to no avail
