Chatham Group Seeks To Block Skydiving At Airport

parachute02BARNSTABLE – Opponents of skydiving at the Chatham Municipal Airport head to Barnstable Superior Court today to seek an injunction to stop a new operation from starting up in town.

Citizens for a Safe Chatham Airport argues that a new skydiving operation would present safety issues for the town. The move comes as the town is considering proposals from two companies that would return skydiving to the airport after more than a two-year hiatus.

In 2013, Chatham Town Manager Jill Goldsmith declined to renew the contract of Skydive Cape Cod, which had been operating out of the airport. Goldsmith cited noise and safety concerns in her decision.

But the Federal Aviation Administration disputed those claims after the company filed a complaint with the agency, leading to the town reconsidering their stance.

Skydive Cape Cod is one of the companies hoping to gain approval to operate at the airport. Skydive Barnstable also submitted a proposal.

The citizens group argues that skydiving is not safe at that location. Residents cited a number of factors, including a recent accident that led to the death of an instructor and diver in 2014 in Barnstable.
