Chatham Re-Opens Vehicle Access to North Beach

CHATHAM – Visitors hoping to drive out onto Chatham’s North Beach received some good news over the weekend.

The town’s Natural Resources Department has announced additional access for over sand vehicles after they had been shut down earlier this year due to endangered nesting shorebirds.

Beach officials have opened access to Trail 7, while keeping much of Trail 6 closed as a result of beach topography.

In addition, the town has announced new parking restrictions, asking that vehicles park on the crest parallel to the ocean leaving sufficient room for other vehicles to pass.

The outer beach, north of Trail 7, will remain closed due to the presence of shorebirds. As will two areas south of the flagpole will be closed to OSV access due to the presence of shorebirds and beach topography.

In their announcement, Chatham Natural Resources officials reiterated the department’s strict dog policy for North Beach. All dogs must be leashed anywhere on the beach, there is a zero tolerance policy for unleashed dogs at this time.
