Chatham Renews Nauset Beach Agreement with Orleans for 1 More Year

CHATHAM – Chatham Selectmen have approved an extension of their current agreement with the Town of Orleans for Nauset Beach for another year.

Town officials agreed that they needed more time to consider a revised beach management deal with Orleans, and both parties will meet in September to develop it.

“We had a good meeting with the board from Orleans, good communication, concerns expressed and I think we certainly ended up exactly where we wanted to end up,” said Chatham Selectmen Chair Jeffrey Dykens.

Orleans Selectmen sent the revised deal to Chatham Selectmen in March, asking Chatham to patrol its own stretch of the beach, but still retaining revenue from out-of-town sticker fees.

But Chatham town officials determined that it was too late in the budget cycle to restore the beach patrol program and expenses.

“They’ve made an unequivocal request to have Chatham patrol their section of beach going forward and I think we need to work towards doing that and budget accordingly,” said Dykens.

The current deal was set to expire on April 30.
