CHATHAM – A possible plan to dredge the Morris Island Cut in Chatham was shot down by selectmen last month.

Outermost Harbor Marine was looking to dredge the area but had not yet defined the exact extent of the work.

The majority of selectmen felt there were too many unanswered questions and would not grant a placeholder for the project.

Selectman Seth Taylor said he was concerned about the project for multiple reasons.

“As you open this up to change the flow of water, it is going to change everything,” he said.

Taylor was concerned that the project would not end up being completely privately funded and that the town would have to pick up some of the costs.

The land is also located in the area which is currently under dispute between the town and the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.

“We are in close discussions right now, in serious discussions, with a great deal of this area as part of that submerged lands that we are having issues with with Monomoy right now,” Taylor said.

Taylor also said getting the county dredge secured is not easy and that there are other dredging projects in town that have a higher priority, according to the town’s Waterways Committee, who is also against the project.
