Chatham Selectmen Implement 2 Hour Parking Limit Downtown

KA_Chatham_Main Street Shopping Stores Shops Road22_112415CHATHAM – Chatham Selectmen are hoping that a new two-hour parking limit will increase the amount of parking spaces available on Main Street in the summer.

The board voted on the limit recently, which will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily from June 15-September 15 on Main Street between the rotary and Shore Road.

The exception will be on Sundays and holidays.

The limit was one of four proposals presented to the town by Community Development Director Deanna Ruffer.

In her presentation to selectmen, Ruffer said a number of time limits were proposed.

“It was suggested a three hour limit for on-street parking,” said Ruffer. “We’re aware that the Chamber of Commerce is suggesting four. Frankly, two, three, four, somewhere in that range.”

Ruffer said she believes the best way to maximize existing parking spaces is time limits.

“Paid parking can be an effective way to promote turnover, it can also help distribute available resources more equitably, as well as providing opportunities for more people to use those parking spaces considered to be most convenient,” said Ruffer.

Ruffer acknowledged that other components of the report, such as using smart meters or kiosks to charge for parking, implementing shuttle service to encourage off-site parking and acquiring more land for more parking lots, could be phased in over years.

Downtown parking in Chatham is already limited to one hour, but the limit is not enforced.
