CHATHAM – Transportation infrastructure is currently a hot topic in Chatham.

Assistant District Construction Engineer for MASSDOT Michael McGrath recently updated selectmen on the Mitchell River Bridge project.

He said the bridge will be open to traffic in June, with only some minor setbacks with landscaping.

A sidewalk which had for years been a point of contention in town has shifted into the planning phase.

The plan which selectmen recently approved is will bring 4-foot paved shared-use lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians to the west side of Stage Harbor Road from Cross Street to Bridge Street.

They also approved a 5-foot-wide sidewalk with a sloped curb on part of Bridge Street, and requested that Stage Harbor Road’s speed limit be reduced to 25 mph from 30 mph.

The town had approved similar projects in 2007 but at that time selectmen only gave their approval for a sidewalk from Main Street to the Mitchell River Bridge.
