Children and Families to Compete in Home-Building Competition – Using Legos

HYANNIS – The 4th Annual LEGO Home-Building Competition will return to Mashpee High School on Sunday   from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event tasks children and an accompanying adult to build their dream home within 45 minutes.

Fifty kids and their adults are given 600 of the colorful bricks per team. “Home inspectors” come around at the end of the round to award “occupancy permits” and “building permits.”

Christine Duren with the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod said it’s an excellent way to inspire math, science, technology and creative learning.

“We want to give them an opportunity to learn a little bit about the building process,” she said. “We want to get the kids thinking outside the box.”

Contestant sign-in starts at 1 p.m., with the actual building beginning at 1:45.

Two age groups, 5 to 8 and 9 to 12, will receive first, second and third place prizes.

Registration is open at www.capecodbuilders.org. The cost is $25 per builder including one adult, with admission to a Hard Hat Construction Comedy Show.

Additional builders are $25 with guests at $5.

Entertainer Brent McCoy will return with family variety show.
