Coast Guard Explores Adding Buoys, Lighting To Woods Hole Passage

BoatWOODS HOLE – The Coast Guard is looking into adding some more buoys and lighting to Woods Hole passage, in an attempt to make the area safer for boaters.

Boats run aground in the area at a high rate and boaters often have difficulty with the current.

Despite the safety issues, Woods Hole resident and frequent boater Catherine Bumpus says she doesn’t think the Coast Guard’s proposals will have much of an impact.

“There isn’t a solution that would make Woods Hole pass an easy passageway for most vessels. There’s just no way to do that,” Bumpus said.

“It can be a tricky place. If you look at the charts beforehand and you understand where the channels are, it is not hard to go through if you come through it prepared, but many boaters don’t,” Bumpus added.

The Coast Guard has proposed adding additional buoys, lighting a current buoy, and putting warning lights in place.
