Coast Guard Saves Kayaker in Chatham Harbor

coast guard02CHATHAM – A Coast Guard Station Chatham rescue crew saved a man after his kayak overturned in Chatham Harbor Friday.

A witness notified Station Chatham around 6:45 p.m. that two kayakers were in distress in the harbor.

A 42-foot near shore lifeboat launched to the area and were on scene within 15 minutes.

The crew found one kayaker in the water and pulled him and the kayak into the lifeboat.

“This was a successful rescue, largely in part because the kayaker was wearing his life jacket,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Kelly Zimmerman. “Any activity on the water is inherently dangerous and it’s important for people to be aware of their limitations and always be prepared.”

The second kayaker made it back to shore before the Coast Guard arrived on scene.

The Coast Guard transferred the rescued man to the Chatham Harbormaster, who returned him to shore.

He did not require any medical attention.
