BARNSTABLE – The National Weather Service is forecasting a coastal storm Saturday evening into Sunday, bringing strong to damaging winds and the potential for minor coastal flooding to southern New England, and in particular to the Cape and Islands.
The strongest winds will occur Saturday evening into Sunday along the coast and on Sunday across the interior. Wind gusts mainly 40 to 50 mph, but with 50 to 60 mph gusts possible across Cape Cod and Nantucket. Possible impacts include downed trees, tree limbs, and isolated power outages. Leaves on trees may exacerbate the problem.
Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion along the eastern Massachusetts coast, particularly on the north side of Cape Cod and Nantucket, particularly during the Saturday evening high tide (between 7 and 8 p.m.) and the Sunday morning high tide (between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m.).
Possible impacts include minor coastal flooding and beach erosion. Particular areas of concern are Scituate, Hull, Sandwich, Barnstable, Dennis, Brewster, and possibly Eastham, along with other typical “hot spots” such as Salisbury and Plum Island. Beach erosion is also a concern.
The forecast is for a high impact event for mariners with the potential for 20 foot seas and 50 knot wind gusts across the waters east of Massachusetts Saturday into Sunday with the worst conditions Saturday evening into Sunday morning.
One to two inches of rain is expected in southeastern Massachusetts, with lesser totals in the northeast and interior. There is a low probability that rain will changes to a brief period of wet snow across the interior before ending; little if any accumulation expected.
