Construction Begins on Major Redevelopment of Plymouth’s Cordage Park

PLYMOUTH – After years of discussion, construction is now underway on a large-scale redevelopment project at the Cordage Park complex in Plymouth.

A groundbreaking was held last week to celebrate the start of the Seaport at Cordage project. State officials, including Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, were on hand for the ceremony. A $2 million state grant will pay for the construction of a new road leading into the complex.

The first phase of the construction, much of which will be located at the site of the old Walmart building, will include 204 housing units and 20,000 square feet of retail space. The new road, Loring Boulevard, will connect Court Street to that portion of the development.

In total, the plans call for 675 new units of housing, 30,000 square feet of retail space, 20,000 square feet of office space, and a 300 slip marina on Plymouth Bay. 25 percent of the housing units will fall under affordable housing qualifications.

For many years, the 57-acre site was the home to the Plymouth Cordage Company, which was the leading rope and twine manufacturer in the world. Some old factory buildings have since been converted into office and commercial space, but that represents a only small footprint of the property.

“A large part of the property remains undeveloped,” said Lee Hartman, the Director of Planning and Development for the Town of Plymouth. “It’s a beautiful piece of waterfront property that has been underutilized.”

“We’re looking to capitalize on its location. It has all the necessary components for a very vibrant development,” Hartman added.

The complex is also home to the Plymouth commuter rail station.

Construction on the first phase of residential housing units is expected to begin in the near future.
