Construction Underway on New Fire Station in Chatham

fire department patchCHATHAM – Construction is taking place on a new fire station in Chatham with an anticipated opening in May of next year.

The $7.7 million station will feature over 20,000 square feet of space, replacing the previous station which stood for 62 years.

Fire Chief Michael Ambriscoe says it was time for a change.

“Our previous building was very outdated, it was a 62 year old structure and it didn’t meet a lot of codes and it certainly didn’t meet the needs of our department,” said Ambriscoe.

The fire department has set up temporarily at the DPW complex on Crowell Road until construction finishes.

Ambriscoe says they had no choice but to move out of their old station.

“We just out grew it, it was originally built for a volunteer department back in the 1950’s and now we’re a full career department and you just need more room,” said Ambriscoe.
