Cyr Criticizes Trump Administration’s Transgender Policy Shift

TRURO – Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr has criticized President Donald Trump’s plans to rescind Obama-era federal guidelines concerning transgender students, saying their well-being and safety is at stake.

In a statement, the Truro Democrat said the policy allowing transgender students to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity has made a difference in public schools.

“These protection have made a real difference for transgender and gender non-conforming students in schools across our country,” Cyr said. “For transgender youth, this is a matter of life and death. I am alarmed and saddened by the Trump administration’s disregard for the safety and well-being of all children.”

Massachusetts law still allows transgender students to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity. 13 other states have similar policies.

“Despite protections from discrimination at the state level, the actions by the Administration send a cruel and harmful message to transgender students in Massachusetts. Now more than ever, it is important for state leaders to let transgender students know we value their education and well-being,” Cyr said.

The Justice and Education departments said Wednesday that public schools no longer need to abide by the Obama-era directive instructing them to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms of their chosen gender.
