MASHPEE – The death of a 14-month-old toddler who died after being struck by a pickup truck last month in Mashpee has been ruled an accident and no charges will be filed.

According to the final report issued by Mashpee Police, Camden Hendricks of Mashpee was sitting in the dirt driveway at 5 Coombs Lane just before 5:30 p.m. on February 24.

The report states that a pickup driven by Brendan Cudhea-Andrade of Bourne was being pulled further into the driveway to get his vehicle off the road when he struck the toddler.

The report said that it was unknown what the child was doing just prior to the accident and witnesses provided no account of what he was doing.

Investigators also said there were several other unknowns, including how fast the truck was going.

The report said that Cudhea-Andrade was unable to see Hendricks in the seconds before the crash.

The child was sitting on the ground near a very large dumpster that was obstructing the driver’s view.

“Due to the height of the Nissan it creates an area in the front of the truck that could be seen by the driver. Cudhea-Andrade did not have enough time to see anything on the ground in front of the truck as he parked,” wrote crash reconstruction expert Matthew Lounsbury.

The narrative written by responding officers and released by Mashpee Police indicated that witnesses on scene became confrontational with officers, with one refusing to sign and complete a written statement.
