Beach Sun Shade Dedicated by Glenna Kohl Foundation in Fight Against Melanoma

OSTERVILLE – The Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope, founded after its namesake passed away from Melanoma in 2008, dedicated a new shade structure at Dowses Beach Sunday and followed it up with a fundraising road race.

Over 500 people signed up for the race, which raised money for additional structures to be placed at other Cape Cod beaches.

So far, the fund has placed similar, umbrella-like structures at beaches in Barnstable and Yarmouth.

Founder and mother of Glenna, Colleen Kohl, said the hope is to continue providing sunscreen and large umbrellas in towns across the region.

“Melanoma is a sneaky disease,” she said. “Everyone likes to get a tan, but we just have to reiterate the use of sunscreen every two hours.”

Each of the umbrella structures in the 20×20 size range, like the one which was installed at Dowses, can cost up to $12,000, she said.

Barnstable and Yarmouth have paid for the installation costs for the ones in their towns, while the fund covered the cost of the product.

Kohl said that the fund has sent letters out to every town on Cape Cod to gage interest in having umbrellas and free sunscreen offers at their beaches.

She said the fund would like to offer larger umbrella sizes in the future.

In the meantime, she advises all who enjoy time under the sun to take extra precautions during the hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. by applying sunscreen every two hours and wear light clothing covering the skin, if possible.
