Dennis Council on Aging Gathering Input for Seniors

DENNIS – The town of Dennis will soon be expanding its Senior Center and the Council on Aging is conducting a survey to better understand the needs of the elderly community.

The goal of the survey is to get a better picture of who the council serves and what programs interest seniors in town.

“We really want everyone’s input whether it’s positive or not,” said Deborah Thompson, the director of the Dennis Council on Aging. “We really want to know what it is that’s not working for people and we want to know what it is that they would like to see.”

Voters approved a $5.5 million expansion of the Senior Center last month and Thompson says the project is in the early stages of planning.

“Our Mission is to enhance the life of our seniors and that’s what we hope to do with our survey – is to get the information to do that,” Thompson said.

Thompson said the survey will provide a baseline of demographics of the town’s senior population, which she believes changes every five to 10 years.

The survey includes questions including time living in town and if residents plan on staying as they age. They also include more open ended questions like what modifications would need to be made to current homes for residents to age in place.

“We wanted to just make sure that we have the target audience on track for our senior center,” Thompson said. “Having said that, we have a lot of people coming into their senior years and we would like to involve them in a senior center.”

The feedback received will help the Council on Aging choose senior center programs and services.

The survey can be found online by clicking here.

Paper copies can be found at the Dennis Senior Center or by calling 508-385-5067.

Input will be gathered for at least another week.
