Dennis Harbormaster Says Overhaul of Sesuit Harbor Needed

KA_Dennis_inspectional services town of dennis sign 37_11713DENNIS – It could cost up to $12 million to conduct massive improvements needed for Sesuit Harbor in Dennis.

That’s according to Harbormaster Dawson Farber who told selectmen last month that he would like to do the project in four phases over several years.

The Sesuit Harbor Use and Capacity Study found that the harbor has infrastructure problems, inadequate parking capacity, decrepit buildings, docks that need to be replaced and an inner harbor that hasn’t been dredged in 65 years.

“We’ve got bulkheads down at the harbor that I think over the course of the next probably seven to 10 years, we risk potential failure of the bulkheads,” said Farber.

The sediment at the bottom of the inner harbor has been found to be not suitable for beach re-nourishment and could be costly to transport.

“I think we’re at a point now where the town as a whole, board of selectmen and the finance committee, has to come to a philosophical decision as to what direction we want to go with the harbor,” said Farber.
