Dennis Police to Crack Down on Texting While Driving in April

u drive u text u payDENNIS – Dennis Police are partnering with over 200 state law enforcement agencies and the state police to participate in the national U Drive. U Text. U Pay initiative.

Law enforcement will crack down on texting while driving from April 8 through April 29.

Drivers who write, send, or read electronic messages or browse the internet face a $100 fine for a first offense even if the vehicle is stopped in traffic.

Teen drivers under 18 are prohibited from using mobile and other electronic devices while driving. Juvenile drivers also face a 60-day license suspension and are required to complete a driver attitudinal course along with a $100 fine for a first offense.

The initiative is funded by a grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Highway Safety Division from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In 2014, 3,179 people were killed and 431,000 more were injured in crashes across the country involving distracted drivers.
