Dennis Villagers Oppose Dunkin’ Donuts at Market

Dunkin Donuts Reportedly For SaleDENNIS – A proposal by the owner of the Cape Cod Farms store on Route 6A in Dennis Village to begin serving Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and sweets has some local residents up in arms.

Dennis Village Improvement Society President Carole Bell says chain businesses are not good for the village, which is trying to keep its unique character.

The proposal will be discussed at a planning board meeting on November 17 at 6:30 p.m.

The owner of the convenience store is asking to change his sign to include the words, “Dunkin’ Donuts.” He does not need permission to change the products in his coffee station from Green Mountain Coffee, which he currently serves, to Dunkin’ Donuts.

Bell says she is concerned not only about protecting the village’s character from chains that make it look like anywhere else, but also with litter and traffic impacts from the fast food chain.

“The minute we put in chains like Dunkin’ Donuts, with their increased traffic and their branding, you don’t get a unique village any more. You just get ‘cookie cutter anywhere USA’ and that’s not why people come to the Cape,” she said.

She also expressed concerns about parking.

“Adding the words ‘Dunkin’ Donuts’ to the sign is obviously going to increase traffic in the area. We have no idea where anyone is going to be parking because the site already doesn’t have enough parking spaces for the customers they have now,” she said.

The group spent 14 years blocking Cumberland Farms and was successful, Bell said. “We are committed to see this through,” she said.
