YARMOUTH – The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee signed a plan which will remove high school sports teams from the Atlantic Coast League and instead place them within the Cape and Islands League.

The change essentially cuts out an away game against Marshfield, a town joined by Falmouth, Sandwich, and Nauset High Schools in that league.

The Cape and Islands League is comprised of Cape Cod Academy, Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Falmouth Academy, Monomoy, Nantucket, Rising Tide Charter School, Saint John Paul II, and Sturgis.

D-Y Regional school committee chair Brian Carey said the decision was based on safety.

“It involves less travel, less late travel,” he said. “Some of the teams are getting back to the high school at 11, 11:30 at night, and some of that is dangerous.”

The MIAA required a vote by the school committee to make the matter official.

The new league change won’t take effect next school year, but the year after.
