“Doug the Quahog” Predicts 77 Beach Days for Cape Cod

Alton and Joann Mann visit Doug the Quahog and Johnny Quahog

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Summer 2017 officially began Wednesday and the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce kicked off the new season with the 9th Annual Quahog Day.

Doug the Quahog arrived at the Blue Water Resort in South Yarmouth and predicted 77 beach days for Cape Cod this summer.

He also predicted that the average temperature on Cape Cod will be 77 degrees.

The event is used to kick off the summer tourism season and promote all the Cape has to offer.

“This has become a rite of passage for a lot of Cape Codders, it’s a Cape Cod tradition, and to be honest, it’s become a tradition for a lot of our visitors,” said Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce Vice-President of Tourism Marketing Kristen Mitchell Hughes.

As part of the light-hearted event, Doug the Quahog told his prediction to his human sidekick Johnny Quahog, who is also known as the Secretary General of the Quahog Republic and the only person who can understand Doug.

“The best part about what Doug can do for you, for me, for him, for everybody, is to tell people about Cape Cod,” said Johnny Quahog.

Doug was escorted by his Quahog Security Detail, a team of black-suited men and women equipped with clamming rakes.

The special emcee of this year’s event was NBC Boston Meteorologist Michael Page.

Alton and Joann Mann made the trip to see Doug the Quahog from Allentown, Pennsylvania and have only missed the event once since its inception.

“We love Cape Cod and it’s just fun to be here and be a part of all this,” said Alton Mann.
