Eastham, Orleans and Seashore Officials Gather to Discuss Nauset Spit

Beach TracksORLEANS – Officials in the towns of Orleans and Eastham met last week to discuss the ongoing issue of the ownership of Nauset Spit as well as ORV use on the property.

Joining the discussion was National Seashore Superintendant George Price, because the Federal government through the Seashore has maintained that it owns the land.

Orleans Board of Selectmen Chair David Dunford said the meeting was very productive.

“Clearly Orleans has made a statement and has a strong feeling that we own the Spit, but the National Seashore also claims ownership of the Spit. And I see that dialogue will continue between the two parties over the near term to settle that very basic issue,” he said.

Dunford also said Eastham officials are considering lifting the ban, under certain conditions, on ORV use at the spit.
