EASTHAM – Eastham Town Meeting enthusiastically approved $85 million for the second phase of the once-controversial town water project. Vigorous applause followed the vote.

Eastham Selectmen Chair Linda Burt said will extend services in the town.

“The people that have got the water to begin with for the small system—it was good for them. But we were worried about the people that still weren’t going to get clean water and this is going to do it for them,” she said.

Town Meeting, which took place at Nauset Regional High School, also used electronic voting for the first time.

Thirty-one articles were on the warrant, including the $23 million budget, which was passed by Town Meeting voters.

Town meeting passed $746,000 in capital projects including two ambulances. Several affordable housing measures were also passed.

Town Meeting also approved giving the town the authority to apply the occupancy excise tax to all seasonal rental properties.

The hotly-debated article to allow driving on a section of the Nauset Spit failed. Neighboring town Orleans does allow vehicles on the spit. Burt said the vote puts the matter to rest.

“I really have a problem with Orleans using our land and not allowing our people to use it. Since the town voted no, to not allow people to drive on the beach, then it’s done,” she said.

The Eastham Town election is on Tuesday, May 19.
