Ecosystems Ecologist to Speak at MBL Science Before Supper

WOODS HOLE – Did you know that plant roots release as well as take up water?

Zoe Cardon, ecosystems ecologist and senior scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) Ecosystems Center, will discuss the dynamic interactions among plants, microbes, and soils at the final MBL Science Before Supper of the season, on February 16 at 5:00 PM at the Falmouth Public Library.

The free, informal presentation titled “Ebb and Flow in Soil Down Below: Plant Roots and the Ecosystem Commodities Exchange,” is co-sponsored by the Famouth Public Library and MBL Associates.

Cardon is an ecosystems ecologist whose work focuses on interactions among plant roots, microbes, and soil.

She has served as President of the Physiological Ecology Section of the Ecological Society of America, Associate Director of the Center for Integrative Geosciences at University of Connecticut, and Fellow in Conservation Biology at Harvard.

Since 2008, she has been a senior scientist at the MBL, where she and colleagues are building bridges between researchers studying ecosystem functions essential for sustaining life on Earth, and researchers using high throughput sequencing to examine structure and function of microbial communities across diverse ecosystems.

For more information about the Science Before Supper talk, contact the MBL Communications Office at mbl.edu or the Falmouth Library.

The MBL is dedicated to scientific discovery – exploring fundamental biology, understanding biodiversity and the environment, and informing the human condition through research and education.
