Endangered Turtles Found on Sandy Neck Beach

Stranded Turtle 7-17WEST BARNSTABLE – Six Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles were found Wednesday at Sandy Neck Beach, a rare occurrence this time of year.

The extremely rare and endangered turtles were spotted while park rangers were attending the releasing a snowy owl back into the wild.

Park Manager Nina Coleman said it was a successful day overall and that unseasonable temperatures are the reason the turtles are being found this late in the year.

“It’s an honor and a heck of a lot of fun too. It is really one of those days you’re just grinning all day because we got to rescue those turtles and be a part of that,” Coleman said.

The turtles were sent to the New England Aquarium treatment center in Quincy to be cared for.
