BARNSTABLE – While the mercury continues to climb, electric bill payers will likely crank their air conditioning units. But Eversource Energy has offered tips to save money on electricity while keeping cool.
Eversource spokesman Mike Durand said that the key is to understand peak electricity usage times.
“Folks probably think that it’s busiest in the early afternoon when it is hottest, but really it’s in the late afternoon, when businesses are still running their air conditioning and people coming home from work are beginning to crank theirs,” Durand said.
Durand recommends air conditioning users raise the temperature slightly and keep it at that level. He said the dry air the unit creates will still keep most feeling cool.
Additionally, Durand recommends doing laundry in the morning or in the evening, after peak hours.
Equally important is keeping the unit’s filters and coils clean, Durand said. Cleaning them every three months can help reduce air flow blockage.
Cracks in the home’s walls and outlets also allow warm air in, he said.
The spokesman said that the energy company continually prepares equipment to handle the increased usage in the summer. According to Durand, the demand for electricity typically grows by 50 percent during the peak summer months.
If customers do experience a power outage, Durand said he recommends they call Eversource.
